Where the Power Grid & Telecom Network Meet

Chairperson:

Peter Zidar

Project Coordinator
EC SUNSEED

This session is about an evolutionary approach to utilisation of already present communication networks from both energy and telecom operators. These can be suitably connected to form a converged communication infrastructure for future smart energy grids offering open services.

Session Location / Room:
Hub Theatre E

Mobile Low Power Wide Area Technologies for Utilities

  • New mobile low power wide area technologies have been standardised by 3GPP. These networks will become commercial in 2017 and connect billions of devices by 2020. We will present the capabilities of these new technologies and how they address the requirements of the utilities companies.
  • In 2016, dozens of trials of mobile LPWA technologies have taken place and the first results are now shared by mobile operators and their partners. Here we will present the outcomes of these trials.
  • Finally we will discuss the benefits of using LPWA based on the existing examples in the energy, smart cities and environmental markets.
